Crypto Market This Week: CPI, PPI to Set Bitcoin’s Next Move; 6 Key US Data Points to Watch

Bitcoin and the wider cryptocurrency market are heading into a crucial week, with six major US economic reports scheduled over the next few trading sessions. Inflation data, retail sales and consumer sentiment could influence expectations around Federal Reserve interest-rate cuts and, in turn, determine the direction of risk assets such as Bitcoin.

Bitcoin was trading around $65,151.19 on August 10, up about 0.6% over the previous 24 hours, with its market capitalization close to $1.3 trillion. With several important economic indicators due within days, traders are preparing for potentially sharper price swings.

Six US economic reports traders will watch

According to the economic calendar highlighted in the report, six key data points are scheduled this week:

  • July Existing Home Sales — Tuesday: The housing data could offer clues about the strength of the US economy and influence expectations for interest-rate cuts.

  • OPEC Monthly Report — Wednesday: Oil-market forecasts could affect inflation expectations, particularly because energy prices can feed into broader consumer prices.

  • July CPI Inflation — Wednesday: Consumer inflation is expected to be the week's biggest potential catalyst for financial and crypto markets.

  • July PPI Inflation — Thursday: Producer prices provide an indication of wholesale cost pressures and can offer clues about the direction of future consumer inflation.

  • July Retail Sales — Friday: The report will show how strongly US consumers continued spending.

  • August Michigan Consumer Sentiment — Friday: The reading will provide another indication of household confidence and economic expectations.

Why CPI could be the biggest Bitcoin catalyst

Among the week's releases, the Consumer Price Index is likely to receive the most attention from crypto traders. A softer-than-expected inflation reading could strengthen expectations that the Federal Reserve has more room to cut interest rates.

Lower rates generally support risk-sensitive assets such as Bitcoin because investors may become more willing to move money into higher-risk investments.

On the other hand, a hotter-than-expected CPI reading could reduce expectations for near-term rate cuts and put pressure on risk assets.

The report also highlights an additional source of uncertainty: energy costs have come under pressure following oil-shipping disruptions linked to tensions in the Middle East. That makes the latest inflation reading particularly important for markets.

Bitcoin could test key price levels

Market watchers are closely monitoring Bitcoin's next major move. According to the analysis, a cooler CPI reading could support a move toward the $66,000-$67,000 resistance zone, while a hotter inflation figure could increase selling pressure and push Bitcoin toward $62,000.

These are potential market scenarios rather than guaranteed price targets, as cryptocurrency prices can change rapidly in response to economic data and broader market sentiment.

PPI will provide another inflation signal

The Producer Price Index will follow the CPI report by one day. PPI measures changes in prices received by producers and can provide an early indication of cost pressures that may eventually reach consumers.

A stronger-than-expected PPI could reinforce concerns about persistent inflation, while a softer reading could provide additional support for expectations of monetary easing.

Retail sales and consumer sentiment add to the picture

The market's attention will then shift toward consumer spending and sentiment on Friday.

US retail sales will provide an indication of whether consumers are continuing to spend despite elevated prices. Meanwhile, the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment reading will offer insight into household confidence heading into the latter part of the year.

Taken together, these figures could help traders assess whether the US economy is slowing, remaining resilient or showing signs of renewed inflationary pressure.

Crypto market could see higher volatility

This week's market setup is unusual because several important economic indicators are arriving in quick succession. CPI will set the initial tone, PPI could either confirm or challenge that signal, while retail sales and consumer sentiment may provide additional clues about the health of the US economy.

For Bitcoin traders, the key issue will therefore be how the data changes expectations around Federal Reserve policy. A shift in rate-cut expectations could quickly affect both traditional financial markets and cryptocurrencies.

With multiple potential catalysts packed into a few trading sessions, Bitcoin and the broader crypto market could experience increased volatility this week.
